So Very Me

The PTA is insane

Well, the one at our school is. I think it’s next week? that they’re having their little weekend movie for the kids. Doesn’t seem a like a real problem right? Well get this!

They do it outside on the side of a building with a projector… at night! It’s almost winter. At night time the weather gets down to about, oh, maybe 30 degrees or so? These people want parents to bring their children out in this cold weather to sit in a field on the cold ground for an hour and a half to watch a movie on a wall. And the sad thing is, they’ll do it!! All in the name of school spirit!! /facepalm

I swear the people on the PTA have no common sense or courtesy as to the well-being of a small elementary school child. You’d think they would, since they have kids of their own… I will not be bringing my son. #1, he and I get cold easily plus I don’t need him coming down with the flu. He’s out of school enough as it is with his problems he has now. And #2, we already have the movie they’re going to show (Toy Story 3).

But seriously… morons!

I had to LOL at this one. I get so annoyed with my local PTO (PTA) we call it PTO here, same darn thing. They do the messed up things, and they annoy me often! I was a part of it, kept up their website then got sick of them treating me like I wasn’t important. So there, walked away from website and told the new person she could figure it out! LOL Is that mean? Sounds mean! LOL

Wow. Sounds like the PTA needs some brains. How would anyone think it would be a good idea. In the summer/spring/fall seasons, Ok I get it. But once the weather starts to turn cold, why oh why would they want to do this?

eek! outside? hmm, not cool! sounds very unpleasant for anyone who goes! if you live in a climate like i do, i know the last thing i’d wanna do is sit outside at night!

  4. Tessie says:

It always seems like more outdoor events take place in the fall and winter when standing outside is an insane idea…

    • Jenny says:

Well if it takes place during the day where the sun can give at least some kind of warmth then ok, no problem. But when they KNOW it’s gonna be cold and kids will freeze to death but the parents don’t care ’cause they wanna be with the “in” crowd… that’s not cool.

As the famous yellow man Homer says ‘Doh!’ What an absolute no brainer. I think I’d have an alternative night round at my house with a more up to date film to rival it. (Just found you via SITS)

Sounds like they need some new ideas…I bet this was fun during the summer but with winter fast approaching I wouldn’t take part either.

  7. Sounds like your PTA, like many, has their hearts in the right place but isn’t really thinking it through. Have they done this same event before in the same way? Perhaps, if this is the first time, they will learn “the hard way”, through lack of participation and parent feedback that there are some important changes that need to be made in order to have a successful and warm movie night.

One of the biggest obstacles to successful school events that I have found is the lack of parent participation. The PTA, at least at my school, is a small group of parents, many who have full or part time jobs and are trying to balance it all with parenthood, who for various reasons volunteer their time for what they feel is “the good of the school community”. As I said above, most of these volunteers have their hearts in the right place, but because their numbers are small, but often their opinions mighty, it can make it really difficult to carry out large events for an entire student body. I used to go to PTA meetings, but found that the “government” part of the experience wasn’t the best use of my time. Instead, I try to support them by helping set-up and clean-up at events, bringing baked goods, or lending my professional expertise when it’s needed.

I definitely feel and understand your frustration with your PTA’s event. Hopefully they’ll be open to constructive feedback from concerned parents like yourself, and will use it to craft more enjoyable events in the future.

We avoid the PTA on most occasions. We pay our dues and we support the events we think are important, but other than that we stay back. Because you’re right. They’re insane!

  9. Mia says:

There’s too much enthusiasm, and less sense, after all we are talking about kids.

Your newest follower, would love for you to visit the house.

The PTA always used to scare me when I was a child in school – so I imagine they’re even scarier when you’re an adult and you’re encouraged to participate ;)

That’s completely ri-donc-u-lous. I waited for a ride on my front porch for five minutes the other day and couldn’t feel my hands.

ps thank you SO MUCH for your very very kind message!!! Next time you’re home visiting, let me know and I’ll e-mail you a bunch of really cool things to do!

Remember when we were kids and, on special occasions of random sorts, our parents would let us stay out playing ’til it was a little too dark, and a lot too cold, for thinking humans? We had SO much fun! It was so thrilling, as a kid, to do something so very out of the ordinary. It wasn’t the PLAYING, it was the HOUR! Sure, it seems perhaps thoughtless to have a family film night outside when it’s so cold, but unless it’s dangerously cold, it’ll probably be a blast for the kids, particularly if you don’t have a drive-in and they’ve never had the drive-in theater experience. Take lots of warm blankets, a big fat bucket of popcorn (plenty to share) and a sense of adventure. Your kid will love you for it.

  14. For a minute I was wondering if you were a part of our school because our movie night is this weekend too! But I looked at our flyer and I guess our PTA has some sense because it says it is in the gym. Phew, no freezing cold.

  15. Wow. That is a whole new level of dumb.

  16. Sam says:

You should join and straighten them out! LOL…maybe they should just move it into the gym.

    • Jenny says:

I’ve totally thought about joining. I don’t think they’d like me very much though. I’m not a follower ;)

  17. Jenn~ says:

They should do the movie night in the cafeteria or somewhere indoors. My daughter is in 1st grade so I know how kooky the PTA can get, lol. You can always bring it up to the head of the PTA.
