So Very Me

Tips for Blogging 102

I’ve been around the ‘net for a long time. And I’ve grown as a blogger and a designer over that time. Granted I’m not likely to make the omgperfectpostyay because, well, I kinda suck at making a worthy argument ’cause I’m to lazy to research things, but I try every now and then. But over the past few weeks I’ve seen some things that bug the hell out of me. And when I say this I mean, on other blogs, or about other blogs (yes, I have gone down this road before).

* Disclaimer: This post is aimed at some blogs I’ve seen making these boo-boo’s. This isn’t all bloggers. Just go through the list and if you’re guilty of anything, instead of peeing on me, just fix it! But if you can’t handle yourself and be grown up enough to just read and offer an opinion and not cry and piss your pants in my comments, ignore my post and move on. So if you have yourself together and calm, read on!

  1. Styled Font Usage
Ok so, some people use a fancy font on their blogs to make their post titles look all pretty and fancy. Yes, I do that myself, and it’s definitely ok! Sometimes it adds to a site and makes it look even better. But when you go so far as to use that font on your entire site, then I have to leave. Others will too. It’s just way to hard to read a blog post like (see below examples). Please don’t do it!

  2. Captcha’s
Ok, I can see the logic in these. I myself don’t use one ’cause they usually break my site. I know a lot of Blogger user’s have them. But my problem with these is, if you’re going to have them, why do so then also hold a comment for moderation? Also, I can tell you a lot of people will turn away from a blog because of this or just never comment. Some of them use ridiculous images that are hard to read. And some of them don’t work even if you get the word right (speaking from experience!!)! It’s either one or the other. PICK ONE!!
  3. Logging in/out
This will piss everyone off. No one wants to log into a site just to leave a comment. This will definitely kill your commentership. Possibly even your readership!
  4. Commenting
We all love comments and they help give some kind of assurance that people are listening, reading and willing to give us feedback or share their thoughts. Love it!! But do not just come around and leave something useless and unimaginative like “great blog. love this or that.” or “i’m here from such and such nice blog.” I personally (here on my own blog) will delete you in a heartbeat. Seriously. Give it a thought or two before you say anything!
  5. Visual Stimulation
Use more images. Walls of text suck and people will hate you!

That’s another two cents from me to you. :) I love you all. Honestly I do. But I just need to make my thoughts heard. I welcome your feedback and ideas so please leave them for me to read and reply to!!

What drive me even more crazy? Word verification AFTER you’ve already typed the comment and hit submit! Then another annoying window pops up with captcha. Ugh!

    Thanks for the tips! :)

Oh, girl, I’m so with you on all of those. I also detest blogs that have black pages and use yellow or pink font. I can’t read it! And I’m pretty certain other people can’t either.

Ohmygod!!!! I’m breaking all the rules! Leave it to me ~haha. Great blog ~friggin love your writing style & humor! One of the things I appreciate the most is when someone uses their voice ~it does not have to mirror my opinions (hopefully NOT haha) because it may change my mind…like for example I think I will now turn off my comment moderation. I just simply had not thought about it. I haven’t been blogging long so I may change how I blog or the direction I want to take my blog but for now I kind of go with “its my blog and I’m gonna blog the way I wanna”. I love the font thingy and sometimes I’m not this wordy in my commenting. Happy Sunday

  4. Hi Jenny thank you for your visit and support for the cause!
I got to read your post and I really appreciate the tips, I must admit I am breaking some rules but it is so great to learn from all of this! I also hate the websites that require log in because I always forget my passwords so I just prefer not to deal with them…

These posts always make me smile, as I think I said the last time you made a similar one :) I agree with the previous commenter: other people’s opinions and likes and dislikes are always more fun if they’re not what your own are. Design is such a personal thing anyway so what a hundred people like, another hundred won’t :)

  6. These are awesome tips and I agree withe very single one of them!

    Great blog…

Totally kidding!! Thank you so much for your honesty; as someone who loves to blog but who wants to do it right, I really appreciate this post. And I only pissed my pants a little bit, but it’s no big deal.

I’m also stopping by from SITS comment hour. I’ll be back; maybe you’ll make me cry next time. :)

Word verification makes me stabby. It’s like you invite someone over for a party and make them pick the lock to get in. Both are rude and a freakin’ pain.
(ummm…not that I’m admitting to any breaking and entering. That would be wrong.) (mostly wrong.)

  9. You know I hadn’t thought about the CAPTCHA and the ‘waiting approval’ thing before. Good thought! I’ll go fix mine if I can figure it out. Thanks for the insights!

I’m with you on everything. I changed my font on the post title because using my logo font was hard to read that way. I have trouble reading sites with poor contrast because I have a vision problem. I tweeted a couple things on Captcha’s last night from my geek husband. I’ll retweet them to the group again when things aren’t so mad and crazy. And I’m working my way through all the blogs from comment hour so I can leave something besides a short, I’m here from….

I think all your points are great!

  11. Hi, I’m back from #CommentHour to spend more time getting to know you. I appreciate your comments on blogging. As a new blogger I’m willing to take advice from those who have been at it longer. I’m going to take the Captcha off my blog for a bit and see what happens. I think I’m doing pretty well on your other “gripes”!

    Great post. love this site.

    kidding :)

I agree with all of these points!!! How many posts will it take for people to get the word verification thing?

Thanks for coming by on my SITS day Monday. :)

I think by far this is the most honest blog I have come across. You are calling them out! I”ve been a blogger since 2009, but just really start to learn about the blog life three days ago. I didn’t know so much is associated to blogging. I have no followers and maybe 10 subscriptions, and I’m still learning how to design my blog with only wordpress features..:-( Thanks for being so real

As a relatively new blogger (3 months!) I appreciate tips from more experienced bloggers, so thank you! :)

I love the pic of your little girlie figurine, super cute! I have been really into grey lately, so l love the colour scheme here.

Looking forward to reading more! Visiting from Lady Bloggers Tea Party! :)

You hit the nail on the head.

Captcha…ugh…just do moderation is much better if you must.

And, as a designer, let me tell you how many times I have to tell people that they DO NOT want their whole blog in fancy fonts.

  18. Jenny says:

Very good points. The font thing bothers me not so much that I can’t read it, but that it takes so damn long to load! And when the fonts don’t load, I get ugly times new roman default poop.
And the captcha thing annoys me to no ends. I’m a human being, not a fly with multiple eyes and quasivision. And when I don’t get it right, the whole damn page refreshes and I lose my comment! Grrr…

  19. You kill with your wit…and your advice isn’t half bad either. I had to put on moderation with my blog because of ugly anonymous comments, but that means there’s no “decipher this code before you can comment” going on.

    • Jenny says:

Well I’m cool with moderation. I do it for the first time commenter’s on my own site (no modding after that). But i refuse to apply CAPTCHA!!

  20. Tony Payne says:

I agree with you, there are some things that just turn you off from reading. If it’s not the font, it’s a post that is comprised of a singe paragraph about 2 screens long. Sorry, my brain tends to suck in a paragraph and then read it to me. It you write one that is 1,000 words long, my brain can’t handle it, and it makes my eyes go funny. Worst of all, you just lost a reader!

Comments that are worthless or irrelevent, especially those that advertise a spam or scam site. Big NO NO! I mark these as spam, but if I have time, and I usually do, I visit the site, then flag it in WOT (Web Of Trust) to say that it is being promoted by the use of link spam.

This was an enjoyable article, it’s good to know that I’m not alone in being frustrated by such things.
